Dream Mother Sends Me Some Reassuring Dream Mothers

Everything young grows old, all beauty fades, all heat cools, all brightness dims, and every truth becomes stale and trite. For all these things have taken on shape, and all shapes are worn thin by the working of time; they age, sicken, crumble to dust—unless they change. But change they can, for the invisible spark […]

Knowing the Substance of the Thing from Inside

“Man needs difficulties, they are necessary for health.” C.G. Jung, “The Transcendent Function” ([1916]/1958), CW 8, par. 143. This will be a short one. As you can see, I have a compromised left hand that makes it uncomfortable to type for very long.  Late last week I sprained my wrist. I was standing on a […]

Animal Medicine: Developing Body Awareness

When it comes to body awareness, my horse Shadow was a genius. In this respect, he was the opposite of my conscious, cerebral self, which tends to be so inner directed and one-track minded that I can be oblivious to what’s going on in my body and the world around me. Have you ever known someone who can be feeling vaguely uncomfortable for hours before realizing she’s cold, or hungry, or has a headache? Or who can be standing directly in front of the object she’s looking for and simply not see it? That’s me. Or it was me before Shadow.

My Horse: My Teacher About Emotions

“No one can teach riding so well as a horse.” ~ C.S. Lewis “No philosophers so thoroughly comprehend us as dogs and horses.” ~Herman Melville Note:  Thank you for the wonderful response to my last post about what my granddaughter learned from her horse. I’d like to continue that theme with this post I wrote several […]

That Certain Something About a Horse

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. [Or a woman].” ~Winston Churchill “Would you be able to take Sophia to the stable now?” I consider how to respond to my daughter’s text. It’s 3:00 on Monday, the day I write my blog posts for […]

Imagination: the Link Between Spirit and Matter

“Symbols, like metaphors, carry meaning between spirit and matter.” Dr. Lauren Artress, The Path of the Holy Fool, p. 25. “Metaphor yokes matter and spirit together without bloodshed.” Marion Woodman, The Ravaged Bridegroom, p. 24 Back in the mid-nineties five women and I launched a group we called The Matrix. Its purpose was to address […]

Take This Coronavirus Status Check

The coronavirus pandemic has called forth some unsettling archetypal forces in all of us. In normal times we ignore most of them as we go about our daily business. But our daily business has been interrupted by our species’ relentless destruction of biodiversity. This has created the conditions for a viral disease that impacts the […]

Stepping out of the Mist

I lived the first half of my life in a mist. I thought I could see but was blind to the sacred. At 17 a spiritual awakening turned me into an avid seeker. My ideas about God came from other people and the Bible. I read a chapter every night. At 27 I experienced a […]

The Magic of Women in Community

So far our gatherings are very organic. At the first one we decided to meet at a different member’s home each month. It has deepened our appreciation and respect for each other’s uniqueness to experience the kind of environment each chooses to surround herself with.

The Mediatrix Archetype in Dreams

It is your Mediatrix who wants to understand and learn from your dreams, and when the time is right, she will show up to provide guidance. Occasionally, her appearance can have the life-changing impact of a mysterious supernatural experience, but more often it’s very subtle, so you will have to be on the watch for her.
